Texting and instant messaging has become very popular among the United States and is used widely. Our generation is always using texting as a way of communicating with friends, parents, and siblings. Many teachers and parents believe that texting has had a major effect on students writing ability. Others also believe that it increases student’s literacy because it allows us to be able to recognize when to use abbreviations. Texting has been studied by experts, who believe that texting is a reading tool and has allowed students who are texting to understand what they are reading.
I believe that texting does not increase our literacy, but makes it worse. Students make many mistakes because that is how they talk in texting, so they do the same in their papers. I believe that it doesn’t enhance students who are weak in reading because they are sticking to the language they know and not applying the language that philosophers and writers are writing.
Texting can help increase multi-tasking and socializing for many reasons. I believe it improves students multi-tasking because it allows them to talk and text at the same time or do homework and text. Many can watch television, text, eat, and go on the computer at the same time because that is what they are use to. It also allows students to socialize because it allows them to become in contact with classmates, parents, and siblings. When a person texts for a while, they feel more comfortable with that person and feels as if they have a connection together which could grow. I believe texting is a social skill in our generation.
Texting could be incorporated in high school classes to help improve literacy. It could be included because it would allow one to witness how their grammar changes through it. Texting is becoming more and more like a computer because it helps one spell better, because it is fixing the spelling mistakes and underlining their mistakes. Texting could be used as a learning tool but I would not recommend it.
Erin, I agree with you in a sense on what you say at the beginning on how the text messaging normally effects the students in a negative way because they start to write papers how they text. Many students, although text with proper english and that is how the studetns can actually improve their writing skills using texting. If the students learn to text properly and use correct english, than the more they text, the more practice that they will get using correct grammar. I do agree though, that as of now, most of the text messagers do not care to use correct english. They tend to abbreviate words many of the time and they dont use correct punctuation. If the teachers in the school try to make a cool lesson on how to make the kids text message and instant message with correct grammar, than there would be a compromise between the American student and the adult because the adults in general do not like texting and the kids tend to find it very useful. If this does work out, than the students will become alot better because on average an American student texts at least every day. Then if the older people in America realize that texting and instant messaging is actually not that bad, than they will start to use the good resource in text messaging and instant messaging. Than our nation will be smarter and more proficient with the computer and the phone.
Your analysis on the topic is very good though and I think that our class and country needs more hard thinkers like you! Keep it up kid! I really love your ambition to do well and be the best student that you can be.

Erin, I would have to agree with you when you say that texting makes the students’ vocabulary weaker when he or she texts often. It is very common to see a student make many mistakes on a paper or project when he uses texting as a way of communication. Even though you say that students are able to multitask, that is the major issue that they use their cell phones while doing homework and other things that pertain to education. Sure it is fine to use when education is not on your mind, but by doing both you may think that you are doing the same thing at the same time and use lingo in a paper, which would result in a bad grade. Some students are able to multitask while others suffer from using this technology. Even though we are using these electronics to communicate, I believe it is good to socialize when you have free time. I believe that this is also a great way of connecting to the outside world, but it is when and where we use it to our benefit. One major argument is the usage during school hours and how students are sidetracked from texting while in school. If we are not in school and texting with our friends, it is a very good way to communicate, but I don’t thing it is necessary to use while we are learning. This is a major concern that many parents share throughout the United States, and it is their children who are losing out on their education.
